The entire time I was knitting this baby blanket, I wondered how large it would be before I ran out of yarn. And, whether or not it would be the right size for a wee one. So here I am, only bits of yarn remaining, and this is the size of the (possibly) finished blanket.
So, am I there yet? It measures just 27" square. I could certainly order more of the colorful Knit Picks "Shine" and keep going. But I'm not sure it's necessary. And truthfully, I'm ready to be done. This seems a good size to throw over the car seat or wrap up a newborn. I'm just not sure how useful it will be as the baby grows older. What do you think?

So cute- I think it is the perfect size- for when the baby is first born, and a perfect snuggly/lovey for when the baby is older. It looks amazing, love the colors as they came out.
I've never commented on your blog before - but that's a great blanket. The size sounds right, and your color sense blows me away. If that was given to me, I would probably get misty-eyed. My compliments.
beautiful! keep it that size it'll be great for the car seat and the stoller.

love those colours
OOooh, I love it. I love the color palette and the design itself. Very nice, very lucky recipient!
new commenter here too.
that is beautiful. and just the right size for dragging around the house and sleeping with when the little kid starts walking.
I agree, it's a great size for the carseat, and the lucky mom will love to take it out and about and show it off! It's beautiful!
That's positively inspirational. For a child's blankie - I think it's a great size. Wrap around for the infant and a great drag-a-long for a toddler. :) I can feel a KnitPicks order coming on. I was thinking of making one in wool...but your Shine blankie has changed my mind!
Bogg surfing is more then just a hobby its an adventure. There are so many great bloggs and so little time to read them all. Protein Power
It is PERFECT!! I love the colors. The size is great, too - just right for a little one to snuggle up with at night. My youngest uses his baby blanket like you would imagine someone using a teddy bear - that's how I see your blanket as the baby gets older!
Lovely. Perfect for snuggling.
I have never commented on your blog either, but that is adorable....
I just found your blog too for the first time and I have to tell you I LOVE this blanket. Do you mind if I copy the idea???? I have tons of friends expecting and this is just perfect for someone who is too early for me to know what they are having yet. :)
I LOVE it!!! Great job!
I love this blanket! I think the size is perfect. I would love to try this blanket.
Just breezing through from the knitty coffeeshop...
I LOVE the blanket! Absolutely beautiful!
I am late on commenting, but that blanket has turned out BEAUTIFULLY, Leslie! I love it! The colors & the size are perfect. Yet another thing I wanna make now....... lol!
I love the blanket. Size and colors are perfect.
Gorgeous! Just the right size to be a drag-around companion for the next few years.
What a wonderful, colorful blanket! You have such good taste!

I remember seeing this blanket some time ago on Mason Dixon's blog. But now I don't see the complete instructions. That November 22nd entry is just talking about one lady's picture of it. Can you give me a link to the entry where they talk about how to make it? Thanks, Chelle
Chelle, the tutorial for making the blanket is found in the February 15, 2004 entry on Mason-Dixon knitting. Have fun!
that blanket is awesome!!! the color choices & coordination make it just SO attractive! that is one lucky baby. how many balls of each color did you use?
Keohinani, I used ten colors, one ball of each, and knit until the yarn was gone!
The colors look so yummy together. Where can I find the pattern for this blanket? My friend just had a baby girl 7 days ago and I would like to make her something.
Happy Knitting
Celia, the instructions for making the blanket can be found on Mason-Dixon Knitting, February 2004 archives.
Gina, the KnitPicks Shine was wonderful...nice to work with, very soft and worked well. I will say the blanket grew in size, about three inches all around, once I washed it. I used size 4 needles and only knit with a single strand. Hope that helps!
Wow! That's an amazing blanket! I love how you have the warms and colds on different sides.
A couple more balls wouldn't hurt. You know you can always block it to make it even bigger.
