Summer is unofficially here and it makes me a little sad to see we have only a few days of May remaining. I love summer, but I hate to see the time flying by now that warmer days are here. These are the days we wait for all winter...and suddenly, they are here and much too quickly gone. I have to remind myself each day to savor the moments!

Speaking of those moments, I'm starting a "summer bucket list" so I can be intentional about adding some fun and creativity into the weeks ahead. Here are a few ideas on my list so far:

*Make some fun items with indigo tie-dye (inspired by this post)
*Try out these yummy-looking coffee treats
*Check out this new exhibit at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
*Rent kayaks and paddle on this lake
*Have a little fun with glitter

What are you planning for the summer season? Is there anything I should add to my list? I'd love to hear your ideas!

P.S. I'm also planning our vacation to Portland, OR (first time visit).

Spring in Kansas is an interesting time. One day sunny, the next stormy, and the next...light snow. Such is life when the seasons are changing here in the Midwest. They say if you don't like the weather here, just wait a minute and it will change!

Luckily, I was able to take advantage of a (mostly) lovely weekend to get outside with my cameras and spend time with friends as well. My new "instant" love is my Instax mini 90, a gift from my husband at Christmas time. I didn't know how much I'd really use this camera, but it turns out it's the camera I want with me wherever I go. Those tiny little prints are just such fun, and the Fuji film is so reliable. I've also been spending more time with my Polaroid 250, rediscovering how fun it is to see the images that come from that camera. It's a little bulky to carry around, but it's definitely a conversation-starter when you do.

One of the great things about living in Kansas City--aside from having many interesting places for photo adventures--is the active Instagram community. It's fun to have "virtual" friends through IG, but even more fun to meet those friends in person. I was able to spend time last weekend with my friend Betsy exploring the River Market area of KC with my trusty instant film cameras (and iPhone). This part of the city is bounded by the Missouri River and has several interesting bridges that make for great photography subjects. There's also a great walking path along with river, as well as a thriving farmer's market and lots of old buildings that make for a fun outing. It was a hot afternoon (80s and sunny!) and we got a good bit of walking in before giving into our tired legs and feet and heading home.

The next day I Betsy and I met our friend Reuben at Unforked, a locally-owned restaurant with a some unique menu offerings. Reuben is the photographer for the restaurant and wanted us to taste-test some of the goodies that Unforked is serving up. We ordered lots of items to share: the Akaushi burger, fundido fries, Hail the Kale salad, the Ahi taco, crispy ghost taco (calamari!) and the Rx salad (spinach with acorn squash). Whew! That's a lot of food for three people, but hey, we were sampling in small bites so the calories were fewer, right?

These were all new to me, except the fries, which are hard to resist with their creamy topping of queso and bacon. (They could be a meal all unto themselves!) My new favorite from the sampling is the Akaushi burger: it was juicy, cooked perfectly and had some kind of "secret sauce" that was very tasty. Reuben declared the Ahi tuna taco his new favorite, though you have to be a fish lover to fully appreciate the flavors. I didn't know you could order any of the tacos on the menu as a lettuce wrap, which I think is a smart option and one I'll consider in the future.

As we let all this food settle a bit, we scanned the dessert menu (yes, we still wanted dessert) to see what new things we might try. This place is known for its delicious frozen custard, and it's hard to walk out without having just a taste of something sweet. I appreciate the fact that you can place orders for half portions so you don't feel quite as full (or guilty) having dessert. I ordered one of the seasonal items, the Banana Booyah Pothole, and it did not disappoint. Bananas, chocolate chip cookies, hot fudge and vanilla custard? Yes, please!

As we were ending our food fest, a huge storm began to roll in. There were predictions of hail and damaging winds, and we cut short our time together to get home before things got bad. Luckily the storm's bark was worse than its bite, but the clouds made for some fantastic photos ops. I felt fortunate that things were not as bad as predicted, though we did get snow the next morning. Crazy Mother Nature!

So tell me...what's new in your world? Where are you exploring, connecting, eating? I'd love to hear about your adventures, too.

It's June! The official start to summer happens later this month, and things all around are bursting with color.

But before we move on to the riotous colors of summer, I want to share a few black and white images from recent weeks. I love color, but I find myself drawn to black and white more and more these days. Perhaps it's because I've been spending more time photographing urban landscapes--pseudo street photography if you will. And shooting and editing on my iPhone makes it so easy to create great black and white conversions. My Polaroid pack camera got a workout this winter, too, with black and white film replacing the standard color. There's something about black and white that takes away some of the distraction and lets you see a scene differently.

Speaking of seeing differently, here are some links that might help change your creative perspective:

If you don't already have the VSCO cam app, download it now! There's an update today that's well worth the download...and it's free! If you already have the app, download the new one to see all the new features.

Check out this new e-course on collaboration offered by the lovely Xanthe. It would be a perfect summer project for you and your family.

Recently I've spent a lot of time exploring my city, and it's amazing to see the diversity of architecture here. We are fortunate to have both urban and rural settings that provide a wide range of inspiration. I find myself drawn more and more to structures, especially older ones, that have a history about them. It's fascinating to see the details, the materials, the shapes that men and women have created over time.
I've been inspired these past few months to get out of my neighborhood and explore. Maybe I'm finally starting to be more comfortable with my navigation skills (ha!) or perhaps it's just the need to escape the suburbs and see new sights. Whatever the reason, I find these small getaways, as brief as they are, to be very inspiring. New places and a fresh perspective can be very energizing! What have you been doing these winter months to fuel your creative juices?

Another recent meetup with fellow Kansas City Instagrammers provided lots of great eye candy. Since it was a chilly--and extremely windy--February day, we spent our time indoors exploring Union Station. These get-togethers are fun, not only for the photo opps but also for the chance to meet interesting people.
If you're a creative spirit (and really, I think most people are), take time time to get to know others who share your creative interests, whatever they are. It can be inspiring, and might just be the jump-start you need to get into the creative groove!

P.S. Look here for information about Instagram meetups; if you don't see one in your area, maybe it's time to organize one on your own!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7312025.post-76662469453421496562013-01-23T15:50:00.001-06:002013-01-23T15:50:32.425-06:00Wordless Wednesday
Another Monday is here, sunny but cold! Our furnace decided to stop working--not once, but twice--over the weekend, so I'm thankful on this brisk day to once again have heat in the house. The Dutch baby I made yesterday was my attempt to warm up the kitchen (and my tummy) a bit while we waited for the repair person.

I'm feeling rather unproductive today as afternoon has crept up on me and I don't have a lot to show for my time. I'm thinking tonight's supper might be leftover soup; I made this chicken pot pie soup last week and it was fabulous! Comfort food is always a winner in winter, don't you think?

Besides cooking and baking, I've been trying to get out with my camera(s) this winter, though it's a hard sell for me when the temperatures plummet. I took a little photo walk last Friday with some friends, and my SX-70 was my camera of choice. Unfortunately, the shots weren't what I'd hoped for; black and white film would have worked better on that gray day. Knowing there will be more gloomy days ahead, I ordered two packs of FP-3000B for my Polaroid pack camera today, so I'll be prepared the next time around!

Speaking of black and white photos, one of my Hipstamatic shots is included in a roundup today on Mortal Muses. Take a minute to hop over there and read the post on the Tintype SnapPak for Hipstamatic. There's some great information and truly fabulous shots included in the post. If you're not a Hipstamatic user, now's the time to jump on board!

The weather outside is--as the song says-- frightful this morning. Our first snowfall of the season, while not abundant, started with a thunderstorm last night, changed over to sleet, and then turned to snow. The howling winds are making things pretty brisk out there and it's still completely dark at 7 a.m.

The good news is that we're all inside, cozy and warm, and I really have no reason to leave home today. This day will be all about wrapping, making final lists for next week, baking and just hanging out together. I've already baked plates and plates of treats to give away, but now I need some for my family! I think another batch of caramel corn is definitely in order; it's so easy to make and hard to resist. Here's my recipe, in case you're looking for a delicious treat to gift (or keep)!

Microwave Caramel Popcorn

(You will
need a clean brown paper grocery bag in which you will cook the caramel corn.)

Pop your
corn in a favorite popper. You will need a total of 4 quarts (16 cups) of
popped corn.

Combine
and cook in a microwavable bowl on full power for 4 minutes, stirring twice:

1/2 cup
corn syrup

1/2 cup
brown sugar

1/2 cup
butter

1/2
teaspoon salt

After
microwaving add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 t vanilla to the above
mixture; stir vigorously.Put popped
corn in large brown paper bag; salt lightly. Pour small amount of cooked
caramel syrup over popped corn, then shake. Continue this process until all the
syrup is used up. Fold the bag of covered corn over and place in the microwave.
Cook on full power for 1 1/2 minutes, then remove bag and shake or stir corn
with spoon. Repeat, cooking every 30 seconds, and then stir corn. Check after 3
minutes of cooking time. It is done when it is no longer sticky. Spread out on
cake pans to cool. Enjoy!

I've mentioned before how much I love mobile photography and how it's been my creative mainstay for 2012. So I'm really excited and honored to be guest blogging today at Mortal Muses about my adventures with the iPhone and what I've learned in my daily shooting this year. I hope you'll click over and read my thoughts as well as some tips I'm sharing there.

I'm also loving the community that's created by sharing photos through Instagram, and the fact that from time-to-time I get to meet some fabulous folks who share this love of shooting and sharing. Yesterday a group from the Kansas City area got together and explored a part of town known as Union Hill. It was a blast! We discovered alleyways, graffiti, flea markets, abandoned buildings, lovely renovated homes and even a cemetery on our walkabout .And the unseasonably warm weather was the icing on the cake.

If you haven't connected with other photographers on Instagram or through other online venues, I hope you'll start to do so. It's such a great way to get feedback on your work as well as to be inspired by the creativity of others. And I urge you to get involved in some real life meetups as well. Seek out others in your town or city, see what's being organized, or take the initiative to organize something on your own. It's such fun to take those online connections to a more personal level!

I'm saying farewell to fall today on this last day of November. Though I know there are technically a few more weeks of autumn that remain, the fact is that we turn the page on the calendar to December tomorrow. And with that, the whirlwind of the holiday season begins! I'm actually ready to embrace the reds and greens, though I've loved the changing colors of autumn.

What did you love most about this fall? And what do you most look forward to in December?

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7312025.post-37843977255468451742012-11-18T15:06:00.000-06:002012-11-19T12:02:51.358-06:00OasisOasis. This word alone brings to mind images of rest, refreshment, and revitalization. It sounds like heaven, right?

I was lucky enough to be part of an Oasis experience a few weeks ago. And it included all of the above, plus much more. It's incredibly hard to describe five days of escape from the everyday world into one where your main task is to play. Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, testing the creative waters, spending time in a new environment--it's definitely an energizing experience.

The Mid-century modern ACE Hotel in Palm Springs provided the perfect backdrop for this getaway. Its many charms provided countless photo opportunities; it's likely the most photographed hotel in the area with 80+ photographers having documented its every nook and cranny!

The daily adventures included playing underwater with our iPhones (safely enclosed in Lifeproof cases), learning about Polaroid cameras and the groundbreaking Impossible Project film, and getting comfortable in our own skin through self-portrait practice. We rode a tram to the top of a mountain and hiked through the amazing forest there; explored the colorful sights of Palm Springs; and just had fun in our creative work space provided by HP.

You can see more of the adventure here, here and here. And if you ever have a chance for a creative escape, I highly recommend it!
