That it's too damn hot! My dog Lulu lays like that all time. I've never seen a squirrel do it but the dogs don't ever really let them out of the trees anyway.
The rabbits and squirrels do that in our backyard in the dirt. I think the dirt is cooler to them than just laying down on their sides. I don't blame them it's been so hot.
That's definitely heat exhaustion. Poor little fellers....try putting a shallow dish or something with some cool water out for them. Keep it in the shade.
I know I'm a little late but I have to say that mine do that all the time. I just thought my squirrels were a little weird or something, it's even funnier to see them do this upside down on a tree. It cracks me up! I always thought they were just getting their jollies! :)

OH my gosh, I have no idea, but it makes me laugh! That squirl is chillin' - as much as any creature covered in fur can chill in this heat!
it means he is hot! maybe the concrete felt cooler?
Hilarious. A friend of mine took a similar photo recently because she didn't know what the heck was up with the squirrel. So funny!
he did get up right? :) must be pretty hot for a squirrel to resort to that!
lol, it looks like one of those "caption" contests :)
Maybe he's hot in more ways than the weather!
Way to go on all the "A" names in the comment section!

That's exactly what the bunnies in my yard do!
