One waffle, hold the syrup

I finished the first of my waffle stitch socks this weekend (finally!) and the jury's still out on it. I wanted to try a different stitch pattern--something other than stockinette--so I tried a new pattern from Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. I love the book! It offers so many options, and the patterns are so easy to follow. I think I just picked the wrong stitch pattern for me. This knit up much bulkier than I'd imagined. Take a look at the stitch pattern.

And the finished sock.

The Socks that Rock yarn is nice to knit with, but I can't believe how much it pools! This is the most pooling I've experienced on any garment. Since it's going to be on my feet, however, I can live with it. Just for fun, here's the other side.

See what I mean? It'll be interesting to see how sock number two turns out. Time to cast on!

I think the sock looks great! The whole pooling thing is such a mystery. You never know how the stitch pattern + needle + gauge + yarn will come together... like the surprise in your box of Cracker Jacks! :)

I love it. I think the stitch is really interesting and the pooling is fun. Overall, great sock :)

Isn't that neat looking! It *will* be interesting to see what the second one does.

I like the stitch pattern. I'm used to wearing ribbed socks, so I don't think it looks too bulky. It will be interesting to see how well the second sock matches the first.

I'm not sure if pooling would piss me off or not. I think, if I see a swatch of the yarn and it's not pooling but MY work does it might make me mad. One thing I learned though is that simple things such as the stitch count and the direction a sock is going in can really make the difference! I made a pair of socks out of LL Lorikeet once, and one was toe up, the other was cuff down. Stitch count was different too, I believe and one sock striped and one pooled. Go figure! I saw a similar sock pattern online.. I like that waffle stitch but I'm not in the market for more books at this time. I'm going to have to find that pattern!
