A face only a mother could love

So, it's time to show you the final step in the Baby Bear creation...his face!

I decided to embroider the features on, using pearl cotton embroidery floss and a gigantic dollmaking needle. This was actually the most nerve-wracking part of the entire process--the face determines the personality of the bear, and I didn't want to mess up!

As it turns out, I think the bear has a bit of a smirk (totally unintentional!) due to the fact that the mouth sits a little off-kilter on the muzzle. My daughter declared that it's *perfect* and so it shall remain as-is. I've gotten lots of compliments (and the bear has received multiple hugs) from everyone who's seen him in person.

I have to say, this was a very satisfying project. Many years ago I made several soft dolls and some miniature ones by hand, and I'd forgotten how much fun it can be to create something so whimsical. I never dreamed I'd spend time knitting a toy, but I completely enjoyed the process. The fact that it's felted makes it even more fun, and I think also makes it look less "homemade" and more substantial.

If you're looking for something different to knit, give this little guy (or gal) a try!

Thanks for your note on my blog! Your bear is really cute! I doubt I could even do one of those!

I love it! It came out perfectly - fantastic job! This is exactly the kind of thing I could get hopelessly distracted by. I'm going to have to make at least one . . .
