August adventures

...while the sun shinesYellow hazeSaturday baking...it's been a while!

It's been hot, hot, hot here...and incredibly humid, too. The daily heat index for nearly two weeks has been between 105 and 110 degrees. The grass is crunchy underfoot and the flower bed in front of the house has huge cracks in it. I always forget that this is what August in the Midwest looks like.

Though our AC works just fine, we've had some major construction going on here that's been bringing the outdoors in. We're having all the windows in our home replaced--long overdue--and blasts of heat have been pouring through those openings on a daily basis. All the windows are now in place so things are looking up!

Aside from the repairs going on, we're getting ready for the start of school again. Every year I'm surprised by how quickly the summer has flown by. We'll be moving our son back to college this weekend and our daughter will be starting her senior year...gulp! It's a busy time for all of us. What are you doing to wrap up the summer? Is it all work, or some fun stuff, too?

P.S. The blueberry scones were a recent Saturday baking adventure. So delicious and easy to make! The recipe is here.

Oh, I wish I had crunchy brown grass! Along with the heat and humidity, we've had RAIN -- I feel like I'm living in the tropics, it's so hot and steamy! It's become mosquito heaven, too. I've never wished so much for cold weather to descend!

My baby heads back to college for sophomore year in about two weeks! Crazy.

Being an Iowa gal at heart, I loved the pictures of the hay which I always called mini-wheats. I especially love them in winter when they're topped with snow - then I called them Frosted Mini Wheats. Maybe that will help you think cool refreshing thoughts in this heat wave.

Beautiful pictures. I love the shot of the hay bales in the field.

The pictures are so warm and delicious. So when you think of the heat do you wonder how the pioneers did it way back when women had to wear long skirts and long sleeve shirts. ugh.

Now that the weather will be turning, will you be picking up those knitting needles?

We've had the hot and humid up here in Wisconsin, but we've also had a fair amount of rain. The lawns are green and growing. I'm looking forward to fall.
