Peony perfume

Mmm, the peonies are starting to bloom. Here's the first from my garden, spotted yesterday as I was walking about my soggy yard.

A friend gave me these plants years ago, and they just keep getting bigger and better each year. I only wish the ants would take their picnic somewhere else!

Peonies are about the only thing I miss from the Midwest. They're so full and big and sweet-smelling!
But, yeah, the ants are pesky.

Without ants, your peonies would not bloom. They eat the sticky sweet nectar off the flower bud so the petals can open. They are a necessary evil!

Er...apparently that isn't entirely true. Darn googling after posting comments!

Peonies are my very, very favorite flower! We had some in our old yard, but at the new place, we just planted some so they probably won't bloom until next year.
