My new toy

So you know by now I had a "big" birthday over the weekend. What you don't know--yet--is that I got a nice "big" gift to match. (I confess, I chose it for myself. Sometimes a girl's gotta give hints to get exactly what she wants.)

So now I'm the proud owner of my first digital SLR!

My new toy

It's a Canon Rebel XSi, the new sibling of the XTi that so many of you seem to own and love. I have to confess, it's a little intimidating. So many bells and whistles, so much for me to learn. But it's also a great challenge, and I love the idea of learning some new photography tricks. (They say learning new things keeps your brain young, so even better!)

Juicy goodness

Reaching skyward

These are some of my first captures. Not too bad! I think this camera will have a permanent home around my neck for a while as I continue experimenting and learning. If you have any tips or tricks to share, I'm all ears!

It looks like you're learning the ins and outs of the new camera pretty well! The hardest thing for me was getting off the auto settings and exploring into the other settings. I took a class at Betterphoto.com and it wasn't cheap but it really helped build my confidence in learning to use the camera.

Look at you! Looks like you're already a pro with the macro shots. I love my Rebel... glad you've hopped on board too! :-)

Hmmmm - you look like a natural with that fancy new camera. Perhaps you'll make more of us move up to the next level in photography. Enjoy your new toy.

What fun! You're definitely ready and deserving of an SLR.

Read the manual a bit, experiment a bit, repeat as needed. I do better when I don't try to learn too much at once, but rather, learn and reinforce one small section at a time.

A master from the get go! Beautiful work! Oh...and lest I forget, Happy Birthday to boot!

Congratulations! Stick it in manual mode when there isn't a pressing 'get it right now' shot and just play. If you keep at it, within a couple weeks you get a feel for what you should use as a shutter speed, how the f stop affects your depth of field etc.. You've got a good eye, you'll be overrun with great shots in no time.
